Keep It Private, Keep It Safe: A Guide to Personal Information Security

Nov 14, 2024 | Independent Living

When Simplicity Meets Caution

Here in Hillsboro, where the days are spent hiking wooded trails and catching up with neighbors over coffee, it’s easy to assume safety comes naturally. But as our lives grow more digital, it’s more important than ever to be intentional about protecting personal information, both online and off.

For those navigating the balance of independence and caregiving, privacy isn’t just a tech issue; it’s about protecting your peace of mind.

What You’re Protecting And Who You’re Protecting It From

You don’t need to be a tech expert to become a target of identity theft. A misplaced medical bill, a weak password, or clicking the wrong link in an email is often all it takes for scammers to get access to sensitive information. Some fraudsters rely on old-fashioned tactics like mailbox fishing, while others use digital tricks like phishing emails and fake websites.

Understanding the risks is the first step to building habits that keep your personal details private.

Smart, Simple Habits That Protect You

Create Strong, Distinct Passwords

Don’t reuse the same password for everything. Make each one unique and hard to guess. A mix of letters, numbers, and punctuation works well, and a password manager can keep them organized for you.

Don’t Take the Bait

Phishing scams are more convincing than ever. Emails might look like they’re from your bank, your doctor, or even your grandchild. When in doubt, don’t click; go straight to the source. Call or log in through a known site instead..

Tighten Up Your Wi-Fi

If you have internet at home, make sure your Wi-Fi requires a password and doesn’t use default settings. Change the name of your network and choose a secure password. This helps block outsiders from snooping on your activity.

Keep an Eye on Your Finances

Regularly checking your bank and credit card statements can help you catch fraud early. If something looks off, even a small charge, it’s worth investigating.

Shred Before You Toss

Anything with your name, address, or account information should be shredded before it hits the recycling bin. That includes old bills, insurance letters, and even prescription labels.

Local Living, Secure Living at MorningStar of Hillsboro

At MorningStar of Hillsboro, we know that independent living is about more than just having your own space—it’s about living confidently, without the worry of being vulnerable to scams or data breaches.

Our team takes resident security seriously. We offer secure internet access, trained staff who understand privacy practices, and community programs that help keep you in the know. Whether you’re catching up with family online or receiving important mail, we’re here to help make those moments secure and stress-free.

Build Habits That Last

The most effective way to protect your personal information isn’t a one-time fix—it’s a lifestyle shift. Think of it like brushing your teeth or locking your front door. The more routine it becomes, the safer you’ll feel.

Talk to your neighbors. Ask your family about setting up fraud alerts. Read about the latest scams making the rounds in Oregon. The more aware we are as a community, the harder it is for criminals to slip through the cracks.

Let’s Keep Life Simple—and Safe

Living independently doesn’t mean you have to navigate everything alone. At MorningStar of Hillsboro, we’re committed to providing a safe, thoughtful environment where you can enjoy the freedom of retirement without unnecessary risks.

We've been here seven glorious months. Moving from another adequate retirement community where we'd lived for eight years, MorningStar Senior Living has enhanced every aspect of our lives and activities including music, exercise, restaurant-quality dining, and a plethora of activities and outings. In our 80s, we really wanted much more physical activity to keep us healthy. MorningStar Hillsboro gives us a warm, saltwater pool we can use anytime. We're in it doing an aerobic routine at least four times a week. On alternate days, we have a professional trainer for chair aerobics in a large gym. The entire building is filled with multi-purpose rooms on every level. That way, no matter how many people have multiple interests, there's plenty of space to enjoy them. A bar and bistro, a large theater for meetings and events, plenty of places for cards and games, an inviting inner garden courtyard for cookouts, and multiple dining areas to accommodate residents and their guests added to our spacious, airy, well-appointed apartments, and we are spoiled for choice. We enjoy our neighbors. Get-togethers are like family reunions where we're always happy to see one another happy and flourishing.

My wife's parents live at Morningstar. We looked at 7 different places when deciding what would work best for them. Morningstar hands down was the best place that had it all. The food is very good, and we love chef Nate! We also liked that they can get her parents places when they'll need that sort of support. Everyone that works there are so good to their residents. We really like the people and the services they offer. It was the best facility that we saw in our evaluations.

I watched MorningStar being built from the ground up and said to my husband before it was even finished that is the place we are going to live and have not regretted that decision. The staff here are wonderful and have become like family to us as well as the residents. We have gracious, caring 24 hr concierges led by the amazing Mika. Administration, Sales, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Culinary, Dining room servers, Life Enrichment and Transportation work endlessly to give us our best life.
