Embracing the Pacific Northwest Lifestyle with Healthy Eyes

Living in Hillsboro offers a unique blend of natural beauty and community spirit. For seniors, maintaining eye health is essential to fully enjoy the scenic trails, local markets, and vibrant community events. Regular eye care ensures that you can continue to participate in these activities with clarity and confidence.

Understanding Age-Related Vision Changes

As we age, our eyes undergo natural changes that can affect vision. Common conditions include:

  • Presbyopia: Difficulty focusing on close objects, often noticed when reading.
  • Cataracts: Clouding of the eye’s lens, leading to blurred vision.
  • Glaucoma: Increased eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve.
  • Macular Degeneration: Deterioration of the central part of the retina, affecting detailed vision.

Regular eye exams can detect these conditions early, allowing for timely management and treatment.

The Importance of Regular Eye Exams

Scheduling comprehensive eye exams annually is crucial for seniors. These exams can:

  • Identify early signs of eye diseases.
  • Update prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses.
  • Detects other health issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, through eye health indicators.

Early detection through regular check-ups can prevent vision loss and maintain overall health.

Lifestyle Tips for Maintaining Eye Health

Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can support eye health.

  • Nutrition: Consume foods rich in vitamins C and E, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc. Leafy greens, fish, nuts, and citrus fruits are excellent choices.
  • Sun Protection: Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to protect against harmful ultraviolet light.
  • Quit Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Quitting can significantly benefit your eye health.
  • Manage Chronic Conditions: Keep conditions like diabetes and hypertension under control, as they can impact vision.

Creating an Eye-Friendly Home Environment

Ensure your living space supports good vision. These adjustments can make daily activities safer and more comfortable.

  • Lighting: Use ample, glare-free lighting, especially in reading areas and stairways.
  • Contrast: Enhance contrast on stairs and floors to prevent falls.
  • Assistive Devices: Consider magnifying glasses or large-print books to ease reading.

Staying Active and Engaged

Participate in community activities that promote both physical and eye health. Staying engaged in the community supports overall well-being and eye health.

  • Outdoor Walks: Enjoy local parks and trails, which provide natural light beneficial for eye health.
  • Community Centers: Join classes or groups that focus on wellness and social interaction.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Engage in meaningful activities that keep you mentally and visually active.

Taking the Next Step

Prioritize your vision by scheduling an eye exam today. Regular check-ups, combined with a healthy lifestyle, can help you maintain clear vision and enjoy all that Hillsboro has to offer.

We've been here seven glorious months. Moving from another adequate retirement community where we'd lived for eight years, MorningStar Senior Living has enhanced every aspect of our lives and activities including music, exercise, restaurant-quality dining, and a plethora of activities and outings. In our 80s, we really wanted much more physical activity to keep us healthy. MorningStar Hillsboro gives us a warm, saltwater pool we can use anytime. We're in it doing an aerobic routine at least four times a week. On alternate days, we have a professional trainer for chair aerobics in a large gym. The entire building is filled with multi-purpose rooms on every level. That way, no matter how many people have multiple interests, there's plenty of space to enjoy them. A bar and bistro, a large theater for meetings and events, plenty of places for cards and games, an inviting inner garden courtyard for cookouts, and multiple dining areas to accommodate residents and their guests added to our spacious, airy, well-appointed apartments, and we are spoiled for choice. We enjoy our neighbors. Get-togethers are like family reunions where we're always happy to see one another happy and flourishing.

My wife's parents live at Morningstar. We looked at 7 different places when deciding what would work best for them. Morningstar hands down was the best place that had it all. The food is very good, and we love chef Nate! We also liked that they can get her parents places when they'll need that sort of support. Everyone that works there are so good to their residents. We really like the people and the services they offer. It was the best facility that we saw in our evaluations.

I watched MorningStar being built from the ground up and said to my husband before it was even finished that is the place we are going to live and have not regretted that decision. The staff here are wonderful and have become like family to us as well as the residents. We have gracious, caring 24 hr concierges led by the amazing Mika. Administration, Sales, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Culinary, Dining room servers, Life Enrichment and Transportation work endlessly to give us our best life.
